follow that farm

So if you enjoy the blog (and are a member of Google) you can follow Cold Antler Farm fairly easily. Just sign into your google account and then you'll see that fancy "Follow" sign up by the search bar. Click that and you can keep track of the goings-on here as either your online self or anonymously. Since I use the old html version of this site, I can't just plop one of those cute widgets that say "Follow Me!" and shows your pretty faces. If you aren't a Google/Blogger member you won't even see the option of follow in that top bar, so just sign in and then visit CAF. Here's to old-fashioned instructions.

Okay, I 'followed' but I don't see the Google Followers doohickey in your sidebar so I don't know if it 'took'.

On a couple of occasions, I've wanted to retweet your posts, but couldn't find the button. I found it's a lot easier to do all this stuff on Wordpress - they have lots of plugins for this sort of thing. I always had trouble getting Blogger to do what I wanted so I switched.

I don't have a follow-me-side-bar-thing because I use the old HTML editor version of blogger, which gives me more creative control but doesn' allow for toys and such like that.

I can look into a facebook/tweet thing. maybe it's just simple code?

Can't you switch back and forth between the html and wysiwyg editors?

Paula, you know I'm not sure? I'm worried if I switch I'll lose my code and adverts...

Jenna, I just checked another of my must-read blogs, also on Blogger (Julie Zickfoose's, and it's the most elaborate Blogger site I've seen. I can't find any Facebook or Twitter share buttons on hers either. So it may not be possible to put them on Blogger...another reader may know for sure.

Okay, the plot thickens. I just noticed a 'Share this Post' link in the black band at the top of Julie Zickfoose's blog. It's right next to 'Follow' on hers but not on yours, Jenna. When I clicked on 'Share', Facebook and Twitter were both on the list. So there must be a way to tell Blogger to put the 'Share' link up there.

It's not a huge deal, but if people can retweet or share on Facebook it can help grow your blog.

Hey Jenna -- off the track question for you -- I'm just curious as to how you keep track of everything going on at the Farm. Do you have a Filofax system, good ole' farm bureau calendar on the wall, ical on the iphone or google calendar ... how do you keep it all together and know whats happening when??? Inquiring minds want to know with the 2011 coming in fast. You have to be very organized to keep this all running smoothly ... tell us the how you do it ...

Pam, what do you mean? the farm itself? Or do you mean the farm-work-writing combo life?

Got into my blog, figured out the default settings--If other folks have trouble with the Follow button not showing up, this is the default link, to use in a RSS reader:

Not that anyone seems to have the same issues I do...but just in case ;)

Everything Jenna -- your life as you know it ... work, farm, home, writing, events, future events, lambing, vets, shot records, projects, financial ... all of it ... what system do you use to organize it all? How do you keep track of it all? You must have a system that works ...

I am so computer stupid I have no idea what all this is about. I have your blogged saved on my favorites list and just click on and there it is. I hope it doesn't get any more complicated than that for me. I love your blog and check in every day just to see how all your critters are. I would hate to miss all this because it's too technical.

Please keep it simple for us computer challenged farmfolk!

I wish I could share some secret notebook or website, but I am not as organized as you might think. Truth is I let a lot of things like outlook, paypal, and my file folder do the bulk of the grunt work of remembering addresses and dates and such and the rest is just filed in my head. Remember, this farm was a slow process, years of tiny steps, little things. I had time to adjust to them all one at a time and things like lambing, bee hive installing, pea planting and such become learned things, as natural as getting out your sweaters from their winter storage when the temperature starts to drop and you see candy corn in the stores.

I am just about finished reading your book Made From Scratch and I have to say that I really enjoy it. About 5 years ago we packed up everything we had, said goodbye to everyone we knew and moved a thousand miles away from Mass. to Kentucky. 5 months later we bought our first home, it is now a mini organic farm with chickens, ducks, geese, goats, rabbits, dogs, cats and pet birds and one fish :) I love it here and I would never go back to the city! I share your love for antiques, music, baking, coffee and animals. I will recommend your book to my friends :)
