Worried About Gibson

I'm very worried about Gibson. Last night after regular chores, running in the mud, and being a normal farm dog he tried to jump up on the couch and yelped in pain. Then he started shivering all over and panting fast. He can not put any weight on his rear besides standing up and walking on them. So he can't lift himself up to put his paws on your chest or hug. He will not eat. He is only licking ice cubes and won't drink. Last night I slept with him on the floor and he slept without shaking but as soon as morning came and he was up to pee outside, he started shaking all over again and panting. I am taking him to the vet of course, but does anyone know what this is? Or have they experienced it with their dogs?

TL,DR: Shivering, rear leg pain, sudden loss of appetite in dog.

Yes I have seen these symptoms. It was leptospirosis. I hope there's something else that could cause it. Be at the vet before he opens.

Oh, no. I'm so sorry to hear about Gibson's injury. I have no experience with this. Just sending healing prayers his way...

ACL injury? Could be anything and it seems like unlikely timing for Lyme's as well as sudden onset. Good luck.

We had this last year with our dog- it was sad! Turns out she had popped a hip a bit out of wack and pulled some ligaments. a large part of hers was due to breed. We keep an eye on her now-- and give her an anti inflammatory/pain meds as needed. She's fine about 90% of the time. The shivering and panting was so disconcerting and scary though! Hope he is on the mend soon!

Hey Jenna,
We have Golden Retriever's on our farm and have had this happen a few times over the years. It has usually been a sprained ligament in the knee area. Hope that is all it is. Usually just rest for the dog and maybe some anti inflammatory. Good Luck.

It's not unusual for them to stop eating when they are sick or have injured themselves. He is putting his body into a healing state.

Hi Jenna, sorry about Gibson. Based on my own dog experience, I'd say the shivering and loss of appetite has to do with him being in pain. Not sure specifically what happened to his rear legs, maybe he tore something when he went to jump? Going to the vet is the right thing to do. They will figure it out. Big hugs to you and your baby boy!

Just back from the vet. We were there before even the Doctor arrived, waiting in the parking lot. The vet does not think it is infection, or tick born illness. She thinks his hips were severely sprained on the ice and the shaking/panting/ is a nervous and pain response. He was given a full physical, a pain med injection, and fluid injections due to his lack of hydration. He is home and on canine bed rest for the week. If it doesn't improve in a few days, x-rays.

Glad to hear the vet thinks it is only a sprain. If he is still not eating try baby food meat, gentle and they love it. All good thoughts for you and Gibson.
