Spreading Wings, Lifting up CAF!

Folks,

I have decided to announce a pledge drive! This blog is a free site, and will remain so. But it takes a considerable amount of time to write, video tape, and photograph things here. I have dedicated my entire life to the farm and to its documentation. It is now my fulltime job, and I am so grateful to have it. With that said, I depend on your readership and support though workshops, book sales, ad clicks, and contributions to keep the dream alive. I would like to invest in a professional-level camera and update the entire website to look more modern and easier to navigate and search. Pledges will also go to simply running this place. The money will cover things as simple as hay costs and chicken feed - as well as website redesigns and design programs. So today I am running a pledge drive from the readership. You can donate a dollar, ten dollars, or whatever you feel is correct. This is of course, totally optional. If you do not wish to contribute, that is totally fine. I'll still be here regardless, writing to you.

I have had the donate button on the blog for years, it hides down there below the barnheart graphic. But - as other authors have already stated - this sounds like a charity option. That is not the point. I see these pledges as a way to offer the blogger compensation for a website you enjoy and follow, a contribution toward the effort and expense of the farm.

Thank you, so much for reading. And happy pledging!

-j

Great idea Jenna, I have no problem donating some money here and there, same as my independent radio station, you provide a lot of entertainment!
A great camera I love is my Canon Rebel, I have a 12.2 mp and I'm getting a 18 mp eventually. They are priced well and sometimes you can get a pack with an extra lens, check Amazon. Don't feel like you have to spend the money on a really professional one, you'll get great photos with one of these

The enjoyment and inspiration you give me through your writing is well worth the price of a movie or two! I like to think that donating to you now and then is similar to purchasing a hardback book every few months. You have certainly provided much more than that for me to read! I would not mind if you ran a post like this a few times a year, just to remind me.
All my best,
Dee

Jenna,
One blog I follow has a "buy jeff a beer button"...... which I thought was a neat idea. How about a "buy jenna a bale of hay" etc etc button? This would be neat and more personal kinda thing........
Love reading your blog, so I don't mind pitching in.
Magazines at the grocery store are going $5 to as high as $10, so a small contribution here is a bargain, really.

Ah, I am strapped right now, but would love to do this when I'm more liquid--will you make this a biennial or annual event? And I like Outdoors' comment from above. Make that contribution button more prominent!

I second what WillowBrookFarm said about the Canon Rebel (EOS) cameras! I've had my Rebel XT (350D) for years now and it's incredible. I've used it for everything from quick shots to long exposure astrophotography on my telescope.

The Rebel cameras work with all the Canon lenses used on their "Pro" cameras and also accept the lenses sold with the older EOS film cameras that are often available at a huge discount. You'll never regret getting one of these cameras.

Jenna, this is spot-on! I absolutely agree that your blog is well worth pitching in a few $$ - I've done so in the past and I'll continue to do so in the future.

Speaking of which, I agree with outdoors1968 - it's helpful for people to have tangible items to pledge on - I worked at a public radio station for years and I know that this approach works. It's also a great way to give people an idea of the costs of running CAF.

Speaking of which, it occurred to me that you're an excellent self-marketer - a skill which many of us small-business owners (read: me) lack. If you're so inclined, I'd love a webisode/workshop on marketing for small businesses. I know this isn't your main business per se, but you do it all the time and I'm sure it has contributed to your continuing success.

What about running a kickstarter for the things you already discussed in this post? Could be fun and would be easy to spread.

Payday is tomorrow...can I say "check's in the mail," except not a check will be electronic?

Jenna, I agree with the commenters who are encouraging you to let us know what hay bales cost and also a cord of wood. Hay here in W. Washington can run up as high as $28 per bale for good quality second cut orchard grass and a cord varies but can run as high as $175. I also agree that like magazines and good books, your blog provides untold hours of enjoyment and you've been such an encourager to those of us pursuing the homesteader way of life that donations are a good and necessary thing to keep you and CAF up and functioning. Keep up the good work and consider the "buy a bale" or "buy parto of a cord of wood" approach.

Is there any way to pay by check? We prefer using cash whenever possible.

Good morning, Jenna ~ This sounds like a great idea!!!!! Could you publish your mailing address so that we can send checks? I am trying to pay off the credit cards (the interest rates are killing me) so I would like to send a check to you if possible. Thanks, Jenna ~ enjoy the mild temps today.
