Enjoy the story of a young writer living in Washington County with her fancy dogs, sheep, lots of chickens, fiber & meat rabbits, geese, ducks, turkeys, a hive and a garden. Expect to hear a lot about mountain music, the civil war, local food, and my friends along the way. It's a big time folks.

Good to know! I once had a rooster flog me at morning chores. I bear the scars to this day. We ate him for supper that night. He was not the most scrumptuous bird I'd raised. Now I know why! Thanks!
thanks for posting. next year will be the year of chickens for us, so we're doing research on the best way of handling home slaughter and prep. Howard never had success with chickens in the past due to predators (and we have a fox family that moved in to the upper pasture this summer) but we'll do more prep work this time before we get the chicks. hoping to get a batch of broilers to harvest after 6 weeks or so, then a small batch of layers/all purpose like Rhode Island Reds.
I'm so glad they did this demo. This is something most people really need to see done before attempting, and yet it's such a taboo.
