MEAT RABBIT 101 Next Saturday!

I'll be hosting an introduction to meat rabbits later this summer here at the farm! It will be held on Saturday, August 11th. The 4-hour workshop will explain the basics of setting up a small rabitry for personal use. Patty of Livingston Brook Farm will be doing a detailed butchering demo and will have her beautiful flemish giants and flemish giant crosses for sale. Come learn about the other, other white meat. A friendly and compassionate introduction to backyard meat. Only 4 spots still available!

Here's a great article about raising rabbits for food from the NY Times, lots of great photos!

I hope you'll be able to have another one soon (I know, I know this one isn't full yet) but I'm fascinated with meat rabbits and they seem like the next obvious add to the chickens and turkeys. Unfortunately, I'm out of town this weekend.

Is it Sunday August 12th or Saturday August 11th?

Do Flemish Giants make good meat rabbits or are they too slow growing? Someone told me the bone to meat ratio wasn't as good on a Flemish Giant compared to a New Zealand. Just wondering if anyone else has experience with this?

I have never tried rabbit, but would love to sometime. I can be kind of spleeny sometimes. (That's Maine for squeamish.) :) I'll bet it's delicious. But i'd have to work my way into butchering one myself. And as i've said before, i greatly admire people who have courage in that department where i severely lack it...

I taught a Free Skool class all the way down here in Tampa, FL on meat rabbits. It caused quite a ruckus among the non-meat-eating folks, but went very well. I know meat rabbits are perfectly normal, but it's nice to read about it to give these in-the-city-limits folks some inspiration to keep going. :)
