Didn't realize Jasper was so small and that Merlin is that big. Merlin next to Seele looks small. But next to Jasper, he's a big boy. I am so glad it's worked out them being together. Jasper seems quite happy to have a horse friend.

Wow,that went really well. I always introduce my horses with a fence in between each for a day or so before turning out together, so that everyone can get used to the idea and calm down. Even then, there is alot of kicking, running, and posturing. No need here, that's good.

Merlin is giving him the "I'm the boss" look and Jasper looks ok with that. It will be interesting to see how their relationship developes in regards to you.

The meeting was a bit anti-climactic, was it not? That's a good thing, I think. I had a horse that wanted to kick the snot out of any other horse that wanted to come near her. Glad your boys know how to play nice. Congrats on bringing them together and finding home to each. ~Vonnie

I love Merlin's hair!!! It's so cool they touched foreheads! When you put your head to someone else's there is a weird sensation, I have felt it with all my children! I love it!!!! So happy for you all!!!

Jenna, it looks like Jasper's neck is getting cresty. I'm concerned, as that is a precursor to founder. Ponies (of which both Jasper and Merlin are) are susceptible to founder when on too rich a diet. This is not an attack on you in any way shape or form. Please take this as concern for two animals that you care for very much. And, this doesn't need to be posted to the forum. Misty

They look great Jenna! A fitting present for your hard work and effort :) Just a head's up, in case no one had mentioned it to you - black horses who live primarily outside tend to "bleach" - meaning you'll see the ends of his coat, mane and tail turn red. I actually have known lots of owners of black horses who stall their horses during the day and only turn out at night for that exact reason!

Misty, thank you for that observation! I am keeping an eye on him for just that reason, the farrier and I talked about it just the other day.

He is just on pasture now, and never gets grain. Any advice on treating or stopping this?

I am glad you have him home. I have had a niggling little thought all through this process....how are you going to deal with the "buddy sour" issues that WILL arise. Might be Jasper screaming and throwing a fit when Merlin is taken out, could be both. I am not trying to tell you how to manage, but please have a pen or safe place to tie one or the other. If this is done consistently, it will become a part of the routine but things can get very ugly very fast. Experience talking here.

Phaedra, good question!

Well, right now its been a day so they aren't soul brothers quite yet. But I want to ride merlin after I get my morning house work and writing done and I already put Jasper in another, adjoining paddock from Merlins so I can get one out the gate without the other slipping out or having a fit.

Jenna,

Lol, I've been watching horses for over 30 years, but let's not dwell on that. My own horse is like Jasper, loves his buddies and annoys the heck out of them. I've seen that look in Merlin's eyes from the other horses many times. Personally, I would prefer a Merlin attitude to a Jasper attitude right now because of my advancing age. But that's what you get when you rescue one at 6 months old, you never know what you'll get. Merlin should be a perfect fit for you, and Jasper has a lot to teach you.

Good luck, have fun, and be safe.

I forgot the happy birthday. You should get a grazing muzzle for one or both ponies. Spring and fall seem to be the worst times for founder. There's a very good site called "Safer grass" that explains a lot about horse diets, and also I'd recommend that you look up Pete Ramey's web site and read some of his articles and maybe his book.
