June 8th 2012

I can finally share my Big News, since now all the pieces have fallen into place. I do apologize for being a blatant tease but the pay off is worth it. This is the big one folks, everything I have been working for on paper, books, workshops, and sweat and tears:

I have resigned from my position at the office and will be a full-time author and farmer from here on out. I'll be making a living through my own words, choices, and actions as a self-employed business owner here in Washington County. I'll be writing and hosting workshops and events to cover the mortgage and growing my own food and livestock to cover the groceries. For eight years I have been working towards this one thing, and my last day at work is June 7th. Time to jump.

I have made all the preparations. There's a humble, but survivable, nest of savings set aside and I am arranging alternative health insurance through my local chamber of commerce. I have projects lined up and much work and writing ahead of me, not to mention the workshops and events here at the farm. I am not asking for any help from the readers, and won't. This is my choice and my life and I can't spend any more time of it behind a desk working for somebody else. I have to make this step or I'll never be able to respect myself. I am thrilled and somber about it. Making this decision is a step I have been hesitating over out of nothing but fear. Fear isn't welcome here anymore. Ever.

I am so happy about this, so terrified about this, and so very ready for this.

June 8th is the first day of the rest of my life.

Congratulations.... You can do it, you have the pluck and drive that most people just dream about. I left the work world 18 years ago and have made it on my own and raised two daughters along the journey. You have have to keep at it and make sure you don't get too sidetracked during your day and remember your needs and the things that must get done each day. It's persistence that really makes things happen... a little step by step and keep at things. But I have been reading your blog for years and persistence is your middle name! I'm so happy for you! You will be thrilled beyond belief... just don't let folks wear you down with their fears... everyone needs to have a chance like this and I wish you the very best!!!!!

Every move you make towards your authentic life gives me hope that someday we'll make it to ours too, and I hope that our kids will be as wise and brave as you, and never have to make the mistakes we made.

Jenna, so very exciting! For some reason I thought this might be your surprise. I myself did something similar last year when I left the city and moved back to my family's homestead (I do still live as a lawyer by day, but I'm my own boss now). It took years of psychological preparation and about 1 year of meticulous planning. I wrote a to-do list of all the things I needed to accomplish in that year and every month or so I would get to check one off. I have that list on my bulletin board to remind me how hard I worked to be where I am now. You write beautiful books, I wrote a list, but anyway it worked for me. Congrats!

Congratulations, Jenna! I have no doubt you will be a success! I just had a thought about the "mystery" that you were publishing in segments (haven't seen one lately?) - what about completing it offline as a NOVEL and publishing it?! I'd sure buy it and I know so many others would too! Just a thought. No doubt, you will be busier than you ever dreamed!

Jenna, that is so wonderful!! I am so happy for you, your good news has made my day!

I had thought the good news would be that you had worked something out to buy Bedlam Farm! But better a small farm and being a full-time farmer than a big farm that you are shackled to 9-5 to support, no? And maybe a Bedlam Farm in the future!

PS I guess I finally figured out how to comment!

Jenna, you have no idea what an inspiration you are to me & how thrilled I was to read your news! I've followed the blog though have never posted a comment before.
I wanted to be Laura Ingalls when I was a child & read the Little House books until they fell apart.
Back in 2005 I picked up MaryJane Butter's Ideabook and it bowled me over & I chucked my miserable office McJob to a more satisfying work-from-home job that allowed me time to can, bake, knit, sew, walk trails and hang with my beloved dogs.
Reading your blog & books have had a similar influence, and you give us HOPE. This year I went to my first sheep show and herding dog trials, and have volunteered to work at the CSA I joined, to take yet another step away from a plugged-in life. So, again thank you, and know much positive energy is being sent your way in this new adventure!

Jennifer

PS - I'm thinking a commemorative CAF 6-8-12 tee shirt would sell like gangbusters. I'd be first in line.

We must be cosmically bound, Jenna: I quit my job today and my last day is May 31st. This is the second time I've left a job to pursue farming an writing. I gave up last time because I was bored at my farm alone. I think my best advice would be to make time for friends and social interaction as much as possible. That way you don't grow to miss the built in socialization opportunities an office provides. But otherwise it's great. Good luck, god speed.

I have had a perfect person for a long time and, besdies the obvious advantages, having someone to share the chores makes it soOOOOO much easier/faster/more enjoyable. It also results in more income. Frankly, reading your blog, I cannot imagine why someone has not snapped you up already! It did not happen to me until 32, so I know there is someone out there whose trajectory is leading to yours. (Don't publish this, I just want to congratulate you.) P.S. I havae miniature Babydoll SOuthdown sheep---cute, hairy faced docile and pretty much useless for anything but pleasure. "Living Honest"

We have all lost virtue
It has slipped away
Like the fall harvest
It has been left
And shriveled on the vine
Soon there will be no trace of it
For it was not preserved in
Diamond cut mason jars
Virtue has rotted
Forgotten in the field
It will be turned under
With the roots
And dug up with
The potatoes
Scrubbed and sliced
And mulled over in
Winter stew
