jazz isn't well

Jazz is my 13-year old (possibly 14, not sure since he was adopted) Siberian Husky. He isn't at death's door, but has slowed down so much from his large leg tumor and thyroid problems that a mile walk is enough to end him for the whole day. It seems like yesterday this fiery wolf was pulling me across the Idaho forests. Now he has a hard time getting up. It is hard to watch. I don't know how much time he has with me, but he may have all of it.

Today was not one of the good days.

Ugh! I know he's getting up there in years. I have a 9 year old wolf who is starting to act her age. It makes me sad to think I'll only have her for a few more years.

Wishing Jazz well!

Soo sorry Jenna. What is wrong besides old age? We just received news this weekend that our youngest pitbull (3 years) isn't responding well to the treatments for his lymphoma. He makes friends and melts hearts everywhere he goes...losing him will be heart breaking. This is the hardest part of having dogs in our lives, they attach themselves to our souls and often spend far to few years with us. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and Jazz.

I know the heartache & pain when one of our "family" is not well , it makes it worst for us humans as they can't tell us what is going on. Just know that many of us send you our love & support & will be saying prayers for Jazz to feel better soon.

Oh Jenna, I'm so sad for you. I know how it is when the animals we love are at the end of their lives. I have been there and there are distressing moments ahead of you..

If my memory is OK, I think Jazz is the animal that is with you from the beginning of your adventures, your constant companion throughout good and bad days..

Courage for what is coming.

So sorry to hear this, Jenna. I hope he pulls through, but I know he's up there in years. I put down my little girl Gini in December, and the decision as to when ... is it today? or is she still enjoying life? ... was as hard as the feeling of loss afterward. Like you, I have a strong emotional connection with my dog(s). Looking at all the comments, you are certainly not alone as you either nurse him back to health, or find it necessary to 'birth him into spirit'.

I am so sorry Jenna. My Buckboy has been here for 10 years, adopted from a shelter at about age 5. He loves to walk the ditches to "hunt rabbits", but can't quite do so anymore. I always thought Jon Katz wrong about his belief that once our pets pass on we don't encounter them again. I think we do - I can't imagine a heaven where our pets were denied entry. Every pet parent knows the heartbreak of watching the struggle of an aging pet. You've given Jazz a wonderful life and you've given him the love he so rightfully deserves. I know when the time comes you will make the difficult decisions necessary because in all you do you show your love for the animals in your life. Cherish the memories, rejoice in the time you have.Wrap yourself in the support being sent your way. Mehileman

So very sorry Jazz is feeling his age. I have a 12-year old German Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix who's getting pretty "crippy". He hasn't been able to walk through the orchard with us for almost two years, his arthritis is so bad. Our vet has him on an aspirin regiment, which really seems to help on those "can barely move" days. Depending on the scope of Jazz's medical issues, your vet might have some similar suggestions.

I empathize with you. So hard to have to let them go on ahead of us.

I hope tomorrow is a better day. For both of you.

I am sorry. We put our french mastiff Emma down a year ago and it was a slow decline. We agonized for months and months over when to end her life. I thought I would know for sure when it was "time", but her body started to give up way before her spirit did, and I couldn't bear to make the decision. She made it for us one morning, and I miss her every day. It seems so trivial to call our canine companions "pets". They are family, and sometimes they are the only ones we can really be ourselves around, and the only ones that are always there for us. Jazz is lucky to be living such a long, and I'm sure very happy life. I hope you still have lots of time left with him, and that he is able to enjoy the rest of his retirement in comfort and contentment.

My pack sends its love as well. And I agree that putting a 14 year old dog through major invasive surgery is cruel. Others will slam me for that, saying that we should go to any lengths, but I completely disagree. Sometimes we have to make the hard choices. By allowing him to live out his days untraumatized you are giving him a huge gift.
