I was commenting on them on Facebook last night. They are magical here in Oklahoma. They don't have them in California, that I was aware of.. Love them.
We've always called them lightning bugs down my way and I love them. The other night long after midnight, I got up to go to the bathroom and (without my glasses) thought I must be seeing UFOs. Happily they turned out to be lightning bugs. I don't remember if I've ever seen them out so late. I couldn't help but imagine that there were tiny fairies cavorting about on the wee lightning bugs and I wished I could hear their laughter.
We don't have fire flies here, nor have I ever seen them for real, but I think I know what I am missing out on and I so want a bit of their magic. Jacinta
We don't have them in California. The first time I saw them, many years ago, in the 'backyard' (aka trash heap and a tree) of my subletted apartment in the West Village I just about died. California has a lot to recommend itself, but fireflies are sorely lacking. There's just nothing that comes close.
I miss the firefly's. You don't see them around here much since they spray for mosquitoes, Instead of using environmentally friendly ways to control them.
@Diane, yes lightening bugs. Spent my childhood in North Carolina catching them in a jar at dusk. That's the way a childhood is suppose to be spent.......not in front of a computer or tv. Don't even get me started. Have already seen a dragonfly or two. Don't you just love spring?
I've seen them here in Massachusetts a few times. I'm 6 miles west of Boston. I haven't seen them in a few years. There is something magical about them. I did see the most beautiful dragonfly yesterday, on the stoop of the new house I'm about to buy. I think it was a good sign. Heather
Enjoy the story of a young writer living in Washington County with her fancy dogs, sheep, lots of chickens, fiber & meat rabbits, geese, ducks, turkeys, a hive and a garden. Expect to hear a lot about mountain music, the civil war, local food, and my friends along the way. It's a big time folks.

I look forward to them & the dragonflies ~ true signs of warm weather to come.
Aren't they neat? I always love my eastern trip every year when I get to see them. I'm in TN right now and I'll be in Cortland, NY next week!
we have woods in our back yard and they always light up the night. I love them.
