we did it!!!

Over four miles of roads, hillsides, horses, tractors, birds, steep inclines, walking and trotting. I was nervous about it all morning, worried how he (how WE!) would do as a pair out in the farm field wilds. Merlin did amazing. I felt amazing. He and I were a team, and our first trail ride with Patty and Steele was a total success. Merlin had four Haflingers run by him, a 4 ton tractor harrowing a field, a strange new horse, cars zipping by him on the road.... nothing phased him (not much, anyway). It was such a thrill to be moving across farmlands on your own horse. We rode to a vast overlook Patty called "top of the world" and it felt like it was. Team Cold Antler pulled it off!

Thank you Patty and Mark Wesner of Livingston Brook Farm!

Jenna,
I love this photo, you did it!!! So proud of you.
I was thinking about you today.... hoping Merlin didn't try to knock you off by running under a tree. ......Thats what happened to me on my first trail ride years ago. Luckily I was able to duck at the last minute or I would have been a gonner.
You need a print of this photo and frame it!!!!

congrats, Janet

IMAGINE HAVING MERLIN ON YOUR FARM, SADDLING HIM UP TO RIDE EVERY DAY IF YOU WANT, GEARING HIM UP TO HELP YOU HAUL HEAVY LOADS. THIS WILL HELP MORE WITH YOUR SKILL THAN ANYTHING YOU DO NOW. NOW IS FOR GIVING YOU ENOUGH SKILL TO STAY IN THE SEAT; I LOVE THE FIRST PIC...WONDER WHAT THE HORSES ARE SAYING TO EACH OTHER?

Great pictures!

And what a beautiful place to live. Looks absolutely gorgeous. Every sneak peek you give of your surroundings makes me want to travel south and check out the Eastern Seaboard!

And hey, now I know why you prefer English, ha ha. I prefer it too - having both types saddles is the best of both worlds!

Wonderful pictures, Jenna! And congratulations on your first ride out. The next will be easier. Both Merlin and Steel fit the old saying that a good horse should have a head like a lady's maid and the behind of a cook! Both lovely solid dual purpose working horses. It's amazing to see how far advanced spring is this far north, but bodes poorly for areas further south where extreme weather will be the rule now.

Yay! If I saw you four together as I drove by, I'd probably drive off the road gawking, lol. I wonder if Merlin will be any more excitable once he drops a few pounds? He looks surprisingly speedy at the trot. Them Hobbitses will surprise ya.
