drunk and lovely
The fireflies are getting heavier. I can tell by how they dance. In mid June they filled the sky and flashed like someone had strung faulty Christmas lights all over my Mountain, but now they seem to all be carrying quarters, moving slower, flashing dimmer. Drunk and lovely, they carry on.

I wish we had fireflies here. Look at me, wishing for bugs...
I've only ever seen them in Gainesville. I guess they don't come as far south as Sarasota...
I'm guessing they are older...and therefore slower and dimmer, just like humans. We don't flash so brightly or quickly when we are old either :( And the flashing is all about attracting a mate. Maybe they are drunk from all that...mating. They are just worn out.
I do love seeing them, but I read some stuff about some varieties of the females (females stay on the ground) being cannibals and eating other varieties by attracting them with the same flashing patterns, thereby tricking them into coming down to mate. When they arrive, there is no mating, just....dinner.:(
Fireflies create a very fine atmosphere for sure. Never mind those jealous female tendencies!
Enjoy your Independence Day.
Very poetic...
I miss fireflies. Them, and cardinals.
