I read your blog regularly, as it's damn entertaining and I get to daydream about poultry. I was doing some research for school (I'm a grad student in horticulture) and thought you might enjoy Cornell's Core Historical Literature of Agriculture: http://chla.library.cornell.edu/
There's some real gems in this collection, all available online, from a time when anthropomorphizing livestock was acceptable in academics. I thought it might help you with research on future rural writing. Not to mention great illustrations. But maybe you've already discovered it.?..
