I can empathize with you because I miss the Adirondacks like you miss the Smokies. Some things just get so deep into one's soul that it's impossible to get them back out again. You may never fully recover from Smokey Mountain fever, but I hope that Jackson finds a special place in your heart and brings you great peace.
You know, though, that you can't go back, right? What you have in your memory doesn't exist anymore. You could try going back, but it wouldn't be the same, and you would wind up disappointed. We all have those places.
On the brighter side, you have your own farm now, and your dog, and all you need are your sheep, which are sure to come. You'll have your warm memories, but your new present will be all that much more to you. Probably more than you can imagine right now.
That doesn't mean you can't come back and visit us folks here in TN. In fact I was going to remind you that the Appalachian Homecoming Festival is coming up at the end of the summer. My wife and I are dying to meet you. You come down we might even have a present for you, in return for that book.
I grew up with fireflies. It's too cold for those sweet little bug lights where I live now. We have to make a trip back down south so my kids will be able to remember fireflies, too.
Enjoy the story of a young writer living in Washington County with her fancy dogs, sheep, lots of chickens, fiber & meat rabbits, geese, ducks, turkeys, a hive and a garden. Expect to hear a lot about mountain music, the civil war, local food, and my friends along the way. It's a big time folks.
