one day i will have a farm.
with rolling hills and dappled woods
and a stream that giggles like a Japanese schoolgirl
i will have chickens
of every creed and color
and in my basket i will carry
eggs, still warm, colored blue and chocolate
and speckled brown
past the greenhouse
through the garden
with its ordered rows
of greens and golds and reds
to the kitchen
in the farmhouse
whose cluttered halls
will echo
with footsteps, and laughter, and the click
of dog's toenails
there will be books, so many books,
the spines will grow to the ceiling.
Two gray geese
-they mate for life, you know-
will stand sentinel
by the barn, near the pasture
where my horse will run
and play tag
with the llama
while the donkey ponders his holy cross
and the goats look on with their great sad eyes
and think about maudlin things
i will name our milk-cow Beula,
for cows do not thrive on change
and spin thread
from stubborn sheep
and muppets that look like bunnies
great white dogs
gentle as fragile things
will guard as shepherds
children named
for Courage, and Honor, and Truth.
