very cool... But please get your pullets from a friend, a neighbor or from a small family farm where the chickens are raised humanely and not from the mega operation.

I agree with smilingcat about not getting the chicks from a factory. I have a few friends who are now interested in chickens, I am flat out giving them some of mine. We did order once from a factory, but after hearing what is done to the unwanted males (its a 50/50 game when hatching eggs half gilrs half boys) But everyone wants girls. If the males have no meat value than they are thrown out alive. Killed, smashed into bins and dumped on top of the last batch killed. The ones who arent crushed right away slowly die due to lack of food, water and good air. Sorry to go all crazy B!tch on that subject. We hatch and sell our eggs and we will NOT ship.

But I do think its great to see that people are gettign into it more.

After the chickens in the highlight was the chick sitting behind Deckland while he was speaking. She looked like she was auditioning for a part in a movie. Yeah, I notice stupid things like

Saddly it's illegal to have back yard chickens in the town I live in. Not sure the reason but they're considered live stock and you're only allowe to have domesticated animals (cats, dogs...). My town sucks. I would kill for chickens.

I too live in a small rural town with apple orchards and cow barns literally across the road. The next big town is 15 miles round trip to a gas station and 30+ miles round trip to a "big" city. I can't have chickens on my double lot, but must have three acres to have something like five chickens or a couple of goats. I am zoned high density residential. No limit on dogs and cats.

Jenna, love the pics of the animals you herd and love. The sheep personalities crack me up. Thanks for being such a card! I was unable to figure out how to turn the site music down far enough to hear the video's soundtrack; what am I missing here in Lynda-Land? Hope your fall is super. I look forward to the winter here in the Northern California suburbs.

Chickens and eggs are catching on everywhere, and it's a great thing to see. I love how easy it is for kids to get involved with this -- it teaches them so much.

Backyard chickens are something I dream about, but sadly will probably never have. DH has SPD, and noises that most people can ignore drive him absolutely nuts! If he has trouble coping with the occasional noises of one cat, how would he deal with a bunch of hens!
