a weekend's haul

I love junking. Going out on the weekend and finding old things. This photo is from a while ago, but I did find all those items on the same day. A day of driving past a garden center, some yard sales, antique shack and the such like. I found my fireking mug, a Tom Waits record, and a kickass suitcase. I also scored that fiddle for thirty bucks (and it came with paperwork from the turn of the last century). It needs some serious work from a luthier, but I'll fix her up down the road.

I like filling my life with these things. There isn't a lot of new stuff in my home. I have a computer, and a cordless phone, but everything else has switches and dials and tubes and cloth cords. They're just better. At least for me.

P.S. Thanks to the reader who sent me the link to that Wolfing Tag. I'm wearing it right now!

As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate older things. One of the things I miss most about VA is cruising Salvation Army and consignment shops for antiques.

Out here (in Cal), lots of antique shops, all high priced.

I love the pics you post!

I am glad that someone else brings home forgotten instruments. :)

(Last weekend's haul--a very vintage parlor guitar for $80 and a broken concertina (that I might be able to fix, even) for $10.)

The parlor guitar I will restring and play. It's in great shape, and I've been looking for one.

Out here there's a major antiquing/junking EVENT that happens twice a year (April and September). Everyone along a 25-mile stretch of farm road drags their old stuff out onto the grass and it's ON! There's some new homemade stuff too, and baked goods, canned jams and jellies and the like. It passes through three towns. My husband and I set aside those two whole weekends just for that. It's the best. This past April we came home with oil and kerosene lanterns, a chainsaw in need of repair, old saws, hand tools, about a dozen cases of canning jars, cast-off overalls for both of us and a single horse trailer! I know there was more...just escapes my memory at the moment.

Is that a Masonade that I see on that trunk?

I made 3 huge mason-ades this weekend from the excess lemons off our neighbors trees- YUM!

I have a question about the Angora's- does it make a big difference whether the bunnies are papered or not? I found someone who breeds French Angoras but I don't think they are papered or registerable....

Thanks for sharing your neat finds jenna- I LOVE junking but like someone else said, here in Cal it is NEVER cheap.

I love finding old things that need a new home. There are plenty of times I score lots of old stuff at my local resale shops, and I know its because people are too afraid to use it or think its unsafe. Unfortunatly I passed on an autoharp I found for $25. Been wanting one of those for forever. Now that I think of it I wish I would have just gotten it. :(

Driving to our farmers market today I went by an estate sale. I pulled over and ran through "Jenna's List" of great finds in my head:

funky jade green coffe cups
old radios
cheese graters
cast iron cookware
old coffe pots...I mean perkolators (sp?)
anything else that was old and cool

I left with all my money and a little sad I didn't find a treasue.
