While I've always loved "Live Free or Die" as a motto (its having been used in a Die Hard title notwithstanding), there's something funny and sad about its appearing on a license plate, which so far as it has a purpose, exists solely to restrict freedom.
It is our state motto, like Maine is "Vacationland", N. Carolina is "First In Flight". New Hampshire has a proud history of fighting for freedom. While I don't personally agree with it being there, it's more a statement of historical fact then a statement on how to live your life. I personally like to aim it at the fact that we have no income or sales tax. It's all in our perceptions and is subjective, I guess.
sorry if it came off as a criticism, it was more a lame try at a wry observation.
